How long does clear aligner treatment take?

This answer varies significantly depending on each patient’s unique needs. For example, a patient who is correcting minor misalignment after orthodontic relapse may only need to wear clear aligners for a few months, while someone who is closing gaps between teeth or aligning crooked teeth might need longer.

Most patients can finish treatment with clear aligners in about 10 to 18 months. During your initial evaluation, our dentists will determine your treatment timeline. Treatment timelines, however, are only an estimate, as treatment can be prolonged if you’re not consistent about wearing your aligners for at least 20-22 hours per day.

Understanding Clear Aligner Treatment

Several other factors can also influence how long your treatment takes. These include the complexity of your case, how far your teeth need to move and how your teeth and gums respond to treatment.

Attending your arranged check-in appointments helps us confirm that your teeth are moving as planned. Once your teeth are in their final, corrected positions, wearing your retainer as directed is essential to protect your new smile and keep your teeth from shifting back. Most patients will wear retainers at night while they sleep.
