Tooth Extraction

At Forster Tuncurry Dental & Implants, one of our primary goals is to help patients keep their natural teeth healthy and maintain them for a lifetime. With that said, there are some circumstances where a tooth extraction becomes the only option for protecting the patient’s smile and dental health.

However, our dentists consider tooth extraction as a last resort after all other options have been explored.

When Do We Recommend a Tooth Extraction?

Dr Kenny or Dr Olivia may suggest a tooth extraction in these situations:

  • For a severely cracked, damaged or decayed tooth
  • For a tooth infected beyond what root canal treatment can restore
  • To eliminate advanced gum disease
  • For wisdom teeth
  • To prepare for orthodontic treatment

If our dentists recommend tooth extraction, we’ll discuss the procedure, recovery process, and tooth replacement options, if needed. Our team is here to support and guide you through every step of the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Recovery time from tooth extraction varies depending on several factors, including the complexity of the procedure and your individual healing capacity. Generally, most patients can expect initial healing within 3 to 7 days, with complete recovery taking 1 to 2 weeks for simple extractions.

Understanding the Recovery Process

For straightforward extractions, you'll likely experience some discomfort and swelling for the first 24-48 hours. The extraction site typically begins forming a blood clot immediately, which is crucial for proper healing. Most patients can return to normal activities within 2 to 3 days, though you should avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours.

Wisdom tooth extractions or surgical procedures may require more extended recovery periods, often 7 to 10 days or more. These more complex procedures involve greater tissue trauma and may include stitches, which can extend healing time.

To ensure optimal recovery, follow these essential guidelines:

  • Apply ice packs for 15 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling
  • Take prescribed or recommended pain medication as directed
  • Eat soft foods and avoid hot liquids for the first day
  • Avoid using straws, smoking or spitting forcefully to prevent dislodging the blood clot
  • Maintain gentle oral hygiene, avoiding the extraction site
  • Get plenty of rest to support your body's healing process

When to Contact Forster Tuncurry Dental & Implants

Warning signs that require immediate attention include severe pain that worsens after day three, excessive bleeding, signs of infection (fever, pus, persistent bad taste) or dry socket symptoms. Please contact our dental practice right away if you experience any concerning symptoms, as prompt treatment can prevent complications and ensure proper healing.

What Types of Extractions Do We Offer?

Dr Kenny’s extensive training and experience allow him to perform all types of oral surgeries and tooth extraction, including:

  • Simple tooth extraction — This is for a tooth that’s fully erupted above the gumline. The process is typically simple, quick, and straightforward.
  • Wisdom teeth — Third molars are the last to arrive at the back of your mouth behind the second molars. We typically recommend extraction because they can be challenging to keep clean, cause crowding, or remain impacted below the gumline.
  • Surgical extractions — These are for teeth that are broken at the gumline or impacted (stuck below the gumline). During a surgical extraction, Dr Kenny may have to remove some surrounding bone to access the tooth.

Do My Wisdom Teeth Have to Be Extracted?

Not all third molars need to be removed. Our dentists will use x-rays and a thorough exam to assess your wisdom teeth and determine if they need to be extracted.

Here are some of the reasons our dentists will recommend wisdom tooth extraction:

  • Crowding — When there’s not enough room for them, wisdom teeth can cause crowding and sometimes disrupt previous orthodontic treatment.
  • Cleanliness — Wisdom teeth are far back in the mouth, making them harder to brush and floss. When you can’t properly clean them, you become more susceptible to developing problems like tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Impaction — Wisdom teeth that are stuck beneath the gumline can become infected.
